A desk study was performed on Nature Based Solutions (NBS), focusing on commonalities, differences, gaps and opportunities for implementation and evaluation of NBS. A qualitative evaluation framework was developed to assure that essential elements are included in projects with Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). A key aspect of the proposed framework was to make a distinction between efficiency and effectiveness in both the design and implementation phases of the project.
Next, the framework was applied to three example NBS cases:
- Case 1: Belgium – River Kleine Nete
- Case 2: Netherlands – side channels (Room for the River)
- Case 3: Scotland – Eddleston water
The example cases highlighted opportunities for improved implementation practices of NBS. This study was commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
