Flood Risk Management Information System Yemen

Climate change compounded with years of political instability have exposed communities in Yemen to extreme weather conditions and natural hazards, especially floods. Between 2020-2022, flooding has caused population displacement, the collapse of houses, the spread of diseases and economic losses requiring urgent humanitarian interventions. Sana’a and Shibam, two historic cities in Yemen, have been significantly impacted due to the fragility of houses and lack of maintenance due to the conflict.

Better information of flood risks, forecasts and historic flood events can help Yemeni authorities to better manage flood risk and reduce losses and damages.

HKV developed the FRMIS (Flood Risk Management Information System) Yemen which shows flood risk information, real-time measurements, and impact-based forecasts. It also offers the option to analyze damages and losses of past (flood related) events. FRMIS is a web-based bi-lingual (English-Arabic) platform hosted in Yemen.

The system was developed for UNESCO by HKV and MetaMeta in close collaboration with the Yemeni authorities.
