Session organised by HKV at Understanding Risk Global Forum 2020

Flash floods in cities in Africa are a real problem. HKV is working to reduce the risk of urban flash floods by among others Early Warning Systems. Early warning starts with knowing where and when it rained, rains and will rain. Crucial information, but often hard to get, when meteo-stations are scarce.

On Wednesday December 2nd, HKV hosted a panel discussion at the Understanding Risk Global Forum 2020. Facilitated by Carolien Wegman, four panel members Frank Annor (TAHMO), Aart Overeem (KNMI), Bashiru Yahaya (GMet) and Dorien Lugt (HKV) discussed the future of precipitation observations, nowcasting and forecasting in Africa. The panel members presented their innovative way of improving measurements, nowcasts or forecasts. Crucial developments in a region where meteo-stations are scarce. We really enjoyed the interactive and lively discussion with the participants in the session!
