Participation in Living with Floods Challenge

HKV and IHE Delft participate together in the Living with Floods challenge of the Dutch Coalition of Humanitarian Innovation (DCHI) and The Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC). The goal of this open innovation challenge is to find solutions that help vulnerable communities reduce their risks of floods. In the pilot phase, two solutions will be selected for implementation in an area near the city of Beira in Mozambique.

Our proposed idea aims to improve location-specific flood awareness through a combination of traditional and modern communication techniques. A mural painting is at the core of the concept, which will show what could be done before, during or after floods. The mural provides information and advice and also refers to additional information channels, such as social media, downloadable apps, SMS services or radio stations. The local population will be closely involved in the design and realization process of the mural.

In February 2021 it will be announced which two projects proceed to the Pilot phase.
