Investment plan and feasibility study to mitigate flood risks in Sekondi Takoradi, Ghana

As part of the Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme (GCIP)’s work in Ghana, the consortium is developing an investment plan and feasibility study to mitigate flood risks in Sekondi Takoradi. The initiative targets major economic corridors and vulnerable flood-prone communities, with the goal of creating a safer and more resilient urban environment. HKV contributes by developing hydraulic models to assess current and future urban flood risks and propose effective measures to mitigate the impacts of flooding. The study explores strategies including both nature- and infrastructure-based solutions, as well as planning and policy interventions. The final output of the study will be a detailed feasibility report that presents a preferred package of interventions, carefully selected based on its technical, social, environmental, and economic viability.

GCIP is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and is managed by a PricewaterhouseCoopers led Alliance, including Mott MacDonald, Adam Smith International, Engineers Against Poverty and MDY Legal. It is a demand-driven programme supporting sustainable green cities and climate-resilient infrastructure in lower-income countries.

Alongside the feasibility study for flood risk mitigation in Sekondi Takoradi, HKV is also developing flood hazard models for six cities in Ghana’s northern regions. The resulting maps will be part of an urban climate hazard portal to support authorities with more evidence-based urban planning.
