HKV has successfully completed the European Space Agency (ESA) BASS Kick-start phase of Coastal Futures. In this first project phase we developed both a methodology and a monitoring platform for dune systems, based on very high-resolution Pléiades satellite imagery (~0.5 m) and machine learning. Sand segmentation is now operational for the Dutch coast, and dune foot profiles (2016-2025) are live in the platform. For Belgium, we developed a use case for the Schipgat dunes.
In three collaborative workshops we explored user needs and applications with over twelve organisations from the Netherlands, Belgium and France, including Flanders Hydraulics, the Flemish Coastal Division, Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO), Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier (HHNK) and the Province of North Holland.
The icing on the cake: ESA published a great article about Coastal Futures on its own website.
