Although rivers, lakes and oceans are often the primary source of flood waters, they are also a major source of prosperity and development. Management strategies like “Room for the River” and the construction of flood defences like dykes and storm surge barriers can help to reduce the threat of floods. Planning and development of these strategies and infrastructure must be done carefully to minimise disruption to shipping, recreation, the environment and other services. We help to ensure that proposed plans and developments will actually meet desired objectives. To this end, we have an extensive knowledge of hydraulics and morphology readily available.
Starting in November 2015 HKV will be directly involved in the planning and technical support of the National water directorate 'Direcção Nacional de Águas' (DNA). Besides support in setting up a long-term national water plan HKV will provide support in strengthening the organization, both at the technical and the organizational level. A Dutch Risk Reduction team (DRR team) was since Monday 31 August 2015 for a week in Myanmar to advise the Government on flood control and solutions for flash floods. After hurricane Komen severely affected the country last summer, Melanie Schultz van Haegen, Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Environment offered Nyan Tun Aung, Minister of Transport of Myanmar, a DRR-Team to support the reconstruction process in the country.
On August 20th 2015 the organisation of the international design competition ‘Changing Course’ announced its winning teams and the teams’ 100-year visions for restoring and sustaining the Mississippi River Delta for the people and industries that call it home.
